Prisoner resettlement - Ministry of Justice

Problem.

Helping prison staff identify issues as part of the reducing re-offending scheme.

I was the senior designer on the admin side of this project with a sister team focusing on the prisoner facing service. I joined the project during private beta in which large parts of the staff facing system were already in development.

Reporting.

Working with prison staff, stakeholders and subject matter experts we looked at where staff were struggling to have visibility of their tasks. Currently staff have to find information in different systems and access was not always available resulting is large gaps of data which was often already out of date.

My role with the content designer was to take existing information that was already in our system and connecting systems and present the information to help staff prioritise their workload.

After a few iterations and with feedback from prison staff we settled on an initial design that presented data in a number of different way as well as allowing the download of data in .xls or .csv format for staff members to manipulate the data as needed.

Prisoner assessment.

The prisoner assessment is a 40+ question set that is used to understand a prisoners history, behaviours and issues categorised under 7 sections. The assessment is completed 2 weeks after entering prison and a similar assessment is made 12 weeks before a prisoner is due to be released.

We heard strong feedback that one thing per page was causing issues due to network problems within prisons and we we’re missing opportunities to add detailed information that is essential for resettlement.

We designed a streamlined version that reduced the number of pages from 15 to 3 whilst also including more areas to add detailed information with the understanding that some data points would be lost.
