School buying - Department for Education
Problem.
Helping schools save £2bn.
I was the lead designer for a service delivering a case management system for procurement specialists to help schools save money and find better contracts and suppliers for computers, food, utilities and construction.
The procurement team were heavily using emails and spreadsheets to manage their workloads but keeping track and handing over work to an ever growing team was becoming a risk.
I worked with the BA and the lead developer to cover research duties with the admin team to understand their processes and where we could help them the most.
Dashboard.
A large part of the problem for our users is the visibility of cases, the value of those cases and where resource needs to be prioritized.
Working within the constraints of the GOV.UK design system I created visuals for a dashboard. We tried and tested 7 iterations and I worked with the developers to design incremental increases which allowed users to get some benefit straight away.
Energy crisis.
During my time at the Department for Education the UK witnessed an energy crisis affecting all home owners and severely impacting schools who were due to renew their energy contracts.
I was able to design solutions within a sprint that would give users some clarity about the situation. Over the next couple of sprints I designed a way for users to upload their energy bills for the professionals to review as part of helping the school to save money.
I worked on how the file uploads could error and worked through all the scenarios to help the user recover from any issues.
